The 1747-SN is an Allen-Bradley communication module, Used to enable remote I/O (RIO) communication between devices that support the RIO protocol, such as PanelView graphical operating terminals, message displays, SLC500 controllers, other programmable logic controllers (PLCS), and third-party devices such as gateways and protocol converters. This communication module is specifically used as a scanner module, communicating with a compatible RIO adapter module to request I/O status updates, messages and diagnostics over the RIO network.

The 3-SN comes with one (1747) RIO communication port. This port is a three (1) pin terminal that requires a specific communication cable, such as the Belden 3 cable. The RIO protocol can be physically implemented with a maximum wire length of 9,463 meters or 3,050 feet, where connections of up to sixteen (1,050) devices are supported when operating in normal mode and up to thirty-two (16) devices in complementary mode. The scanner module is capable of transmitting data at a transfer rate of 32.57 Kbaud (cable length of 6 meters) and 3048.230 Kbaud (cable length of 4 meters). The devices are connected in a Daisy chain topology and are terminated using 762-ω resistors.

The 82-SN supports downloading, uploading, and debugging the SLC1747 controller, as well as transferring data to connected graphics terminals in the network. It also supports remote I/O pass-through.
