The Allen-Bradley 1786-BNC is a ControlNet modular repeater adapter. The module is a control network communication network accessory, mainly used to extend the length of the control network and to assemble different topologies, such as star, ring, linear or point-to-point topologies. The repeater module can also be used to physically convert ControlNet cable media from coaxial cable to optical fiber and convert optical fiber to ControlNet coaxial cable.

A control network is an industrial communication protocol used for multipoint communication of devices. These devices can be a mix of ControlNet client modules, controllers, visualization systems, and gateways. The ControlNet network consists of major communication highways called trunks, where devices or nodes are connected via ControlNet shunt. The control network supports distances up to 1000 meters. If the network exceeds this maximum distance, 1786-BNC can be used.

The 1786-BNC is compatible with 1786-RPCD repeater double copper modules, 1786-RPFS repeater Short range Fiber modules, 1786-RPFM repeater medium range fiber modules, 1786-RPFRL Fiber ring repeater modules, and 1786-RPFRXL Fiber ring repeater modules. The maximum allowable adapter in series is 20 1786-RPA.

The repeater adapter module supports mounting directly onto the mounting board or using DIN rails. Direct panel mounting provides higher vibration and impact resistance compared to DIN rail mounting. The module supports horizontal or vertical orientation and is powered by an external power supply of 18-36VDC.

The repeater adapter module is equipped with one (1) detachable terminal for input power connection, one (1) 75 ohm terminal resistor, and two (2) DIN rail locks.
