Modbus TCP is a fieldbus based on the Modbus application layer that allows data to be transmitted over standard Ethernet (TCP/IP) (as opposed to serial transmission using Modbus RTU and ASCII). Unlike most other Ethernet-based fieldbuses, such as EtherCAT or Profinet, Modbus TCP does not require fieldbus-specific hardware and runs on common network cards and routers used by millions of people. In addition to price advantages, motor controllers with Modbus TCP can not only be controlled using PLCS, but also can be easily controlled by standard configuration computers because almost every programming language provides a library for TCP/IP communication.
Also, in many cases, dedicated libraries for Modbus TCP already exist. Using standard hardware also brings disadvantages to Modbus TCP, but: unlike CAN or EtherCAT, Modbus is not suitable for real-time applications that require accurate timing synchronization of multiple axes. Speed blocks are transmitted through Ethernet, but with uncertainty, that is, the transmission time can fluctuate greatly, especially in larger networks. Modbus TCP is ideal for applications where multiple motors are controlled independently of each other, such as when making format adjustments.
