Anybus X-gateway is a configurable stand-alone gateway that allows workshop equipment on a Profibus network to communicate with equipment on a Modbus-TCP network and vice versa. Typical applications are installations using a mix of Siemens and Schneider Electric, ABB or GE PLCs. An example is an automotive manufacturing plant, where Profibus-based segments should be integrated into industrial Ethernet-based control applications and adopt the popular Modbus-TCP protocol. The X-gateway is a compact device for standard DIN rail installations and 24 volt industrial power supplies. It acts as a server (slave) on the Modbus-TCP network and as a host on the Profibus side.

The Profibus main feature is configured through HMS Anybus NetTool for Profibus, a powerful but easy-to-use Windows-based configuration tool that comes free with X-gateway. When the initial configuration is downloaded to X-gateway, it transparently passes up to 512 bytes of input data and 512 bytes of output data between Modbus-TCP and Profibus. Up to 124 Profibus slave stations can be connected to the gateway. In addition to data transfer capabilities, X-gateway also integrates a powerful embedded web server on the Modbus-TCP side to support web-based remote diagnostics and visualization. Even OPC servers are included in X-gateway's delivery. X-gateway contains Profibus and Modbus-TCP communication interfaces that are certified to fully comply with their respective protocol standards.
