The protection system 216 consists of at least one electronic device rack type 216MB62, in which the electronic modules (plug-in units) are inserted and many I/0 units are actually interfaces to the main factory. Protection systems are available in compartment or compact versions. Figure 12.1 shows an example of a 21 6MB61 device rack mounted in a protective cabinet hinge frame. The electronic module is designed as a plug-in unit that plugs in from the front. The B448C parallel bus provides communication between the electronic units and is mounted at the rear of the rack. The rear also has a standard cable for I/0 and a connector to connect the printer.
The input transformer, auxiliary relay I/0, and trip relay unit are installed inside the rear panel of the protection cabinet (see Figure 12.2). The number and type of electronic units installed, their location in the rack, the number of racks, and the number and arrangement of I/0 units vary from plant to plant. A compact version of the REG 216 protection is also available, which is essentially a standardized device rack (see Section 2.3). The compact version can be installed in an open frame or in a compartment with other devices.
